Twin Cities Radio 1993 Events: January 4- KMZZ/980 begins a computer driven Hard Rock format as "Mega Rock." On Jan. 1, SMN's Z-Rock was dropped and the "Jaws" theme aired during the transition. Early January- WMIN/1030 moves to WRPX/740, dropping "The Oldies Channel" at 740 and later changing the call to WMIN. January- WCCO/830 moves Tim Russell to the early morning hours, causing him to quit. January- The Fall 1992 ratings are out: WCCO is down, KJJO FM/AM (104.1/950) is up after changing to Modern Country, KFAN/1130 is up. January 27- WTCX/105.1 begins broadcasting January 30- WCTS/100.3 moves to 1030 March 1- WDGY/630 begins a Nostalgia/Easy format, simulcasting for a few weeks on WMIN. March- WMIN drops the satellite feed for a computer driven Nostalgia format March 11- KCFE/105.7 begins broadcasting April- Steve Cochran is fired from KDWB/101.3 April 27- Joe Soucheray is hired by KSTP/1500 to do 2-4pm, Don Vogel is moved to 4-6pm, Turi Ryder moves to Tues-Fri 6-9pm, and Tom Weyandt is hired to do 9-11pm. Bruce Williams is cancelled. April- The Winter 1993 ratings are out: KSTP is up, WCCO is up, KFAN is down. May- WCCO becomes "News/Talk 830" to the dismay of longtime listeners May 3- 100.3 returns to the air with the call WBOB-FM and a comedy loop promotion May 13- WBOB-FM begins it's Modern Country format with a seemingly endless "Turn Your Knob to BOB" campaign Late May- KMZZ/980 begins simulcasting sister KRXX/93.7, later changing the call to KRXX July 30- Bob and Kenny's last day at KSTP, Freddie Mertz is a temporary replacement July- The Spring 1993 rating are out: WCCO is down in all categories, KSTP is up in all categories, KLBB/1400 is up, KJJO-FM is up over one year. August- Dave Ryan takes over morning drive at KDWB September 8- Pat Milan takes over KSTP's morning show with many different cohosts, later deciding he doesn't want the job. September 20- Bob and Kenny's first day at KFAN September 29- The last day of KUOM/770's 81-year-old Public format October 1- KUOM becomes "Radio K," with a student-run "college alternative" format October- 1220 returns to the air as WIMN with a mostly satellite fed (SMN Stardust) Nostalgia format. October- Longtime WCCO advertiser Wally McCarthy leaves, two weeks later signing with KSTP October- KUOM installs a stereo transmitter October- The Summer 1993 ratings are out: WBOB-FM shows tremendous growth, throwing KEEY/102.1 from second to fifth place in 12+, WCCO is down in all categories, WDGY and KCFE show growth October- WBOB-FM's transmitter is moved from Nowthen to the KMSP/9 tower in Shoreview November- Cargill Communications purchases KLBB for $1 million, KBCW/1470 for $398,000, and WTCX for $2,677,074 December 1- KBCW signs off December- KJJO-FM/AM begins calling it's format "Real Country Variety" December- KQQL moves it's studios
