FCC Grants Upgrade for Duluth Station

Posted on February 6, 2020 by Jon Ellis

The FCC has granted an upgrade for the University of Northwestern-St. Paul’s WJRF/89.5 (Duluth).

UNWSP received WJRF last year as part of the former Refuge Media Group’s donation of its stations. It has been relaying the Contemporary Christian format of “Life 97.3” (KDNW Duluth) with 1.65kW/181m (class A) since September.

Under a new construction permit, WJRF will upgrade to 40kW/223m (class C1), using a directional antenna to limit the signal towards WHSA/89.9 (Brule, WI). Other than the null to the southeast, WJRF’s coverage will be comparable to KDNW, which uses 72kW/168m (class C1) from a different tower.

UNWSP has not announced long-term plans for WJRF. It also owns KDNI/90.5 (Duluth), which carries the Faith Radio network.

The organization does not have three full-power FM signals in any other market.
